Green Cabinets?

It seems that more and more we hear about products that are environmentally friendly or “green”. Custom cabinetry may not seem to have many opportunities to be green, but you may be surprised at how construction methods and choice of materials can make big differences on how a custom cabinet shop affects the environment.

Our belief is that constructing a cabinet which is durable and of high quality is the most direct way that a cabinet shop can be environmentally responsible. Every day precious natural resources are consumed making cheap cabinets and low quality products that end up in landfills after only a few years. Our custom cabinets and furniture pieces preserve the environment by silently serving their purpose in your home years after a cabinet of lesser quality has been discarded and replaced due to customer frustration and dissatisfaction. A custom cabinet from Chaparral Cabinetry is designed and constructed to last a lifetime.

Our cabinet boxes are made using 3/4“ cabinet-grade plywood rather than particle board or thinner plywood which is the standard for most low quality, mass producers of kitchen cabinets. Cabinet-grade plywood is much more stable and less susceptible to warping or water damage than any particle board. At Chaparral Cabinetry we believe that a quality cabinet starts with quality materials.

Our cabinet and drawer box interiors can also be made using prefinished plywood that has a very durable, UV-cured clear coat. This superior, clear finish is applied by the manufacturer in a much more efficient manner than an on-site application by a painter. Also, it is water-based meaning less toxic solvents are released into the air. Using our UV-cured prefinished plywood eliminates excess waste, fumes and air contamination.

Our main adhesive for cabinet construction is Titebond® Original wood glue, which is part of their GREENchoice™ line of adhesives. It produces no harmful fumes, is non-toxic and contains low VOC (volatile organic compounds)levels contributing to a safe and healthy environment.

Our main supplier of lumber and plywood is Roddis Lumber Co. in San Antonio, who is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The FSC is an independent, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Roddis Lumber distributes an ever-increasing variety of environmentally progressive wood products that offer FSC certification, no added urea formaldehyde and CARB compliance. CARB (the California Air Resources Board) guidelines are becoming the standard for regulating harmful emissions from manufactured wood products. Some of these products are available only at a premium depending on what your preferences may be.
